Just as the new football season kicks off we have a different kind of league table to look at this month courtesy of eskimoz.co.uk, who have analysed the 20 best - and worst - places for tech jobs in the UK in 2024. Their new study has assessed 169 UK counties/local authorities based on six criteria: commute distance, tech employment percentage, median hourly pay, pay increase from 2020-2023, number of tech enterprises, and their growth rate. The scores were normalised and weighted to ensure fairness, resulting in final scores from 50 to 90, with the data sourced from Nomis, provided by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

London unsurpisingly takes the top 5 spots in the study, with the City of London coming out on top, offering the highest wages (£30.15/hour) and the shortest commute (5,348 km annually). It achieved the highest final score of 90.00, with a notable 6.97% growth in the number of tech enterprises. Westminster, Camden, Hackney and Islington take the next four spots, with Middlesbrough emerging in sixth place, with 165 tech enterprises and the fastest growth rate of 13.79%. Wales also ranks highly in the table with the Isle of Anglesey, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire all featuring in the top 10 places.

At the other end of the scale Eskimoz found that Thurrock unfortunately ranked bottom with a score of 50. The area currently has 300 enterprises which, according to the study, is expected to fall as Thurrock's tech sector is declining at the second-fastest rate of 35.48%. The full study and analysis of the 20 best and worst places for UK tech jobs is available here.
